I joined Bosch Digital (then Azena) in November 2019 as a Frontend Developer. Over seven years my role grew from hands-on frontend engineering into design-system architecture, people leadership and AI assisted backend development and devops responsibilities.
Engineering & Architecture: Building the "CD-System"
When I joined, our UI was built on a minimal Stencil web components library. I could see it would not grow with us, so I pushed for a framework-based component library that would keep our brands consistent and make everyday UI work easier for every team.
After evaluating several frameworks, I led the migration from Stencil to Vuetify and built our core design library, the "CD-System" (Common Design System). It let a team of mostly backend developers ship clean, consistent UI across several parallel projects.
Beyond the initial migration, I was responsible for:
- Lifecycle & Maintenance: Keeping the CD-System healthy, scalable and well-written.
- Testing & Quality Assurance: Setting up automated unit, UI and integration tests to keep production stable.
- Developer Onboarding: Building an interactive Storybook playground and documentation, which made onboarding new developers much faster.
- Framework Evolution: Leading the migration of the whole UI ecosystem from Vue 2 to Vue 3 without disrupting active projects.
The CD-System stayed at the heart of our frontend for the rest of my time at Bosch. Its modular, multi-brand theming let the business move quickly from Azena to the Bosch and Rexroth brands and respond to new requirements at short notice.
Core Frontend Focus & Collaboration
I am a frontend developer first and foremost; it is where I feel most at home. Rather than aiming for full-stack ownership, I focus on being a strong frontend specialist who works well with everyone across the stack.
I contributed to all of our customer-facing frontend projects, which gave me a deep familiarity with different project setups, API integrations and state management patterns. More recently I have used AI tools like Claude to make backend changes myself and unblock my own workflow, always finishing those features together with our backend specialists, who review, secure and refine them.
Empathetic Leadership: People Lead
I believe technical success is built on trust and good relationships, even in a company as large as Bosch. Alongside my engineering work I took on the role of People Lead, which I really enjoyed and would gladly take on again.
In regular, confidential 1-on-1s I supported my colleagues with both their professional development and their well-being. Together we built a positive, supportive team culture and spotted signs of burnout or roadblocks early, before they became problems.
Systems & Cloud Infrastructure
In my recent projects I took on more devops responsibilities to understand the whole delivery lifecycle, gaining hands-on experience with:
- Infrastructure as Code: Managing resources with Terraform.
- Container Orchestration & CI/CD: Deploying applications to Kubernetes and managing delivery pipelines with Argo CD.
- Observability & Monitoring: Using Grafana and Kibana to monitor application health and analyse logs.
This has made me a more well-rounded engineer who understands both frontend applications and the cloud environments they run in.
Looking Forward
My seven years at Bosch Digital were defined by continuous growth, technical ownership and meaningful leadership. For my next chapter, I am looking forward to bringing that mix of frontend expertise, systems thinking and empathetic leadership to a new team.
